When thinking of a theme and ideas for this beatdown I can always lean on Vandelay. Vandelay texted me Friday and mentioned it was “National Awkward Moments Day”. Once he mentioned that I knew we had to have a beatdown of awkward exercises and tour the beautiful campus of Boystown to complete them.
Pre-Runners – Stiches, Vandelay, Slow Pitch, Tator Tot, Steeple, DOA, T Swift, Jump Street and Cheap Seats
We covered the standard Mission, Principles, and Disclaimers.
The Mission of F3 is to plant, grow, and serve small men’s workout groups for the invigoration of male community leadership.
5 Core Principles: 1) It’s free; 2) open to all men; 3) always held outdoors; 4) peer led in a rotating fashion; and 5) ends in a circle of trust.
I explained that this workout would be a mixture of awkward/not fun exercises and then we moseyed. We took off heading West on Heros Blvd and arrived at the first monument for warm-a-rama.
Warm-A-Rama
Awkward Exercise 1 – stretching consisted of putting one leg in the air while keeping your other leg straight and touching the toe of your other foot. We did a 10 count on each leg.
15 Goofballs IC
15 hand to opposite toe stretches IC while jumping – very awkward
We then moseyed to the roundabout by the Boystown Post Office to complete a couple more awkward exercises
15 Vandelays IC – Chunooks with Upward Pickle Pushers
7 One Legged Burpees
15 Oh Yeah’s
Thang 1 – we then all partnered up and did the burpee broad jump right on the street next to the roundabout.
We did 1 broad jump to 1 burpee, then 2 broadjumps to two burpees and went all the way up to 7. Kudos to Stitches for dominating this portion of the work out.
We then did a longer mosey along the north side of the lake and arrived at the little/baby hill.
Thang 2 – we continued with our partner from the burpee broad jump and did a piggy back carry with your partner up the hill. At the top of the hill you then completed 5 one legged burpees. You then ran down the hill and had the other partner piggy back carry to the top and do 5 one legged burpees. Once both had completed you ran back down the hill and planked until the 6.
Thang 3 – we then moseyed to heart break hill to complete our third thang. Once we arrived we split into 4 groups. Each number stayed with their group
Group 1 started in the northwest corner and completed 5 one legged burpees and then diagonally bernie sandered to the south east portion of heartbreak to complete 3 of their most awkward merkins 15 IC
Group 2 started in the southeast corner completed 3 sets of their most awkward merkins and then side shuffled to the southwest corner of heartbreak
Group 3 started in the southwest portion of heartbreak and completed 3 rounds their most awkward leg exercises 15 IC and then ran down the hill to group 4
Group 4 completed 3 awkward ab exercises and then side shuffled to station 1
6 MOM
15 Aquaman IC
18 rancid style hammers

In lieu of National Awkwards Moments day I shared my own awkward story of how I met my M’s family. The night before I was trying to think of an awkward moment and my M reminded me of this situation.
I explained that I’m a bit of a talker : ) and my M’s family is NOT that. When she introduced me to them for the first time (6 months into our relationship) we were all sitting in their living room in Kansas City. Keep in mind my M is one of 9 children so a big family. As we’re all sitting around the couch and recliners I started asking each of them one by one questions about themselves (did I tell you that didn’t like to talk). Slowly but surely and one by one they all left the room after I started interacting with them. The last person I started talking to was Jeff (M’s brother). He looked at me and said man you really know how to clear out a room!! It was definitely one of those awkward moments and I questioned if this would ever work out with my M : ) Years later I’ve become extremely close with her family and all ended up well.
I related that to new guys (FNGs) that join F3. A lot of men might feel awkward when they come to their first workout. What is all this new lingo? Will I fit in? What they hell is an FNG? There is an opportunity for all us vets to welcome them and make them feel at home. We can all point to one or two HIM that helped us when we first started that encouraged to come back. That was my message to the group this morning. Be welcoming and encourage all the new or newer PAX to be apart of the group. They probably feel awkward (I know I did) so the more we welcome them the more our retention numbers will increase!
Vandelay took us out in prayer!
