QIC: Vandelay

I was concerned about numbers being that it was the day after St Patrick’s Day and the first weekend of NCAA Basketball. Plus, it is still colder than crap and I wouldn’t blame anyone for taking some extra rest.  For those trying for the Trifecta – we couldn’t let them down.  I will say that Cheap Seats and I had some fun planning around National Awkward Moments Day so we would be building off some themes that he incorporated during the 6 AM show.  Additionally, I planned our route to keep moving and cover some of the lesser-known monuments on the Boystown Campus.

After things were clearing out from the 6 AM crew, I welcomed the 7 AM group and indicated it was National Awkward Moments Day and things may be a little weird – where is Roadhouse, when you need him?  I also told everyone that we would be touring along the north boundaries of the campus, and they needed to be prepared for audience participation.

We covered the standard Mission, Principles, and Disclaimers.

The Mission of F3 is to plant, grow, and serve small men’s workout groups for the invigoration of male community leadership.

5 Core Principles: 1) It’s free; 2) open to all men; 3) always held outdoors; 4) peer led in a rotating fashion; and 5) ends in a circle of trust.

We moseyed over to the area surrounding the obelisk at Dodge St and worked through some Warm-A-Rama exercises.

Message from the Q – Vandelay:

On March 18th, we recognize National Awkward Moments Day. This is an annual day that every person can relate to. We have all had our awkward moments from time to time. They are a part of life; they just happen.

Awkwardness or embarrassment is defined as an emotional state of intense discomfort with oneself.

Have you ever called someone by the wrong name, tripped over nothing, walked into a door, had the completely wrong words come out of your mouth, or just forgotten what you were doing?  The list could go on and on. Sometimes, things just do not seem to go right and something happens that may make you feel like you want to run and hide.

Cheap Seats covered this topic nicely at 6 and tied to F3 as well.  I was hoping to do similarly.

First, keep in mind that anyone can experience social awkwardness. Social awkwardness describes a feeling of being out of place, an inability to understand social cues or body language. Someone who is socially awkward may not even realize there is a disconnect. For some, it can lead to anxiety.

Although we were having a lot of silly fun this morning for 2.5 hours referencing awkwardness, the reality is that it can be hard for FNGs to feel comfortable penetrating our group and we need to be mindful of that fact.  We tend to have a kind of socially awkward comfort with each other and love being together and sharing with one another.  This can be intimidating to new members – especially as an FNG.  It is not bad that we have that closeness and comfort with each other, but our goal needs to be to give that away to others as they enter F3.  In this upcoming season of growth, we can only hope that the awkwardness continues.

Thanks to my good friend, Cheap Seats, for collaborating with me on the events of the morning- No better Co-pilot.

Cheap Seats closed us out in prayer.

Aye!
