I discussed how 01-30-17 was a significant day in my life as I was involved in an officer involved shooting on that day. I shared the details of the incident and having dealt with PTSD afterwards. The week o’ Farva is my way of ensuring I will have support and be around my brothers during a week that is always difficult for me. Exercise has always been what has helped me deal with stress and anxiety and this group has truly been life savings so I am thankful for all of you. Live every day to the fullest because things can change in an instant.

YHC had been thinking about and looking forward to finally leading at the Cat house. The PAX were given a tour of the QIC’s neighborhood that he grew up in. We ran up and down the many hills on 43rd street, this street was not paved, nor did it have speed bumps in my day. I am lucky to have survived multiple jumps over the blind peaks of these hills. The group stopped in front of 6807 Sunshine drive and completed 21 monkey humpers. This is the house I grew up in and lived for 21 years. The House is not being taken care of as nicely as my dad used to and it makes him very sad when drive by the house now. Next, we ran to 6619 Sunshine drive, which was an empty lot where I used to play sandlot baseball with my neighborhood friends. We practiced our best swing and sprinted past centerfield. Schrute displayed his soccer sprinting prowess here. Originally this lot was a grocery store called Veys food store. This store was owned by a former Omaha mayor with the last name Veys. The grocery store was there in the 70s and early 80s and my mother worked there when she was pregnant with me and my twin brother. There was even a “twin” alcohol sale printed in the newspaper ads when my mom gave birth to us. Foreshadowing? No, it was not a Crown Royal sale. Next stop was 6503 Sunshine drive, this is the neighborhood bar called Darby’s. I spent my 21st birthday there and many nights thereafter. We completed 21 ranger merkins because had I not been hired as a police officer as a 21-year-old, I would have most likely joined the military. We continued on to Morton Park at 5724 S. 41st street. At the intersection of 41st and “W” street we encountered a driver who was not happy we were running in the street at 530AM. We were blessed with a 2-minute-long car horn for his inconvenience. I commented on how there is no longer a swimming pool at the park and it made me sad because I learned how to do lots of sweet dives there (like the gainer and forward one and a half). The pool was replaced with a splash pad and these splash pads make kids soft IMO.  We completed one lap around the park.  We stopped in front of 4120 “V” street and I instructed the PAX to hold a silent plank for 97 seconds. This was my Nana’s house and she lived to 97 years old. No such thing as silence with this group. We chatted about my favorite dish that Nana made for me while I swam across the street at the pool. Burgers and pizza. Like it usually does, a moment of reverence turned inappropriate with talk of what we could or could not do for 97 seconds. KOA is the usual source, but I will not confirm or deny that…. sorry Nana. We finally started back towards the AO, but stopped one last time at 4207 Harrison Street. Along the way, we passed a building that was a video store called Captain Video (which had a certain section that will remain nameless, but also where I rented lots of Nintendo games) and also another building that was a Goodrich ice cream and Breadeaux pizza. At 4207 Harrison Street we performed 7 “Slurpees” (Slow burpees) in the parking lot of the business. This building was a 7-11 when I was growing up and I drank many slurpees there. We took another trip up and down 43rd street and arrived back at the site with over 3.5 miles under our belts. Everyone did great and we arrived back at the cat house right on time. Shout out to Low Flow for being “with” the 6 on this run. HIM doing HIM things.

I discussed how 01-30-17 was a significant day in my life as I was involved in an officer involved shooting on that day. I shared the details of the incident and having dealt with PTSD afterwards. As I type this, our department has experienced two officer involved shootings in 16 hours. These new incidents always bring a flood of emotions and add in the anniversary of my shooting and it could be easy to be overwhelmed by emotions. The week o’ Farva is my way of ensuring I will have support and will be around my brothers during a week that is always difficult for me and now I am extra grateful to have made the choice to Q all week. Exercise has always been what has helped me deal with stress and anxiety and this group has truly been life savings so I am thankful for all of you. I think about the chain of events that the SKY Q put in motion to put me in that place that day. I decided I wanted to be a police officer in kindergarten and worked till my 21st birthday to make that happen. Always remember where you came from because it shapes who we are and always remember that sky Q (Jesus) has a plan for all of us and will put us right where we need to be.

YHC choose a workout called “The Cooper”. The workout consisted of running 1 Lap and then 10 Burpees, 10 Deep Squats, and 10 Merkins. Another Lap and then 9 Burpees, 9 Deep Squats, 9 Merkins. Another Lap and then 8 Burpees, 8 Deep Squats, 8 Merkins……etc. A couple Merkin modifications of the diamond and Chuck Norris variety. We finished the workout and most PAX ended up with 3.5 miles. Decent mumblechatter at the beginning, but less as the workout continued and the laps came faster. Many HIM took a turn to lead the exercises. A couple battles about whose turn it was to lead and of course Ferdinand had to have #1 and then claimed to be number 1. A simple but effective workout for a cold morning.

I discussed how 01-30-17 was a significant day in my life as I was involved in an officer involved shooting on that day. I shared the details of the incident and having dealt with PTSD afterwards. G String is curious about the details of my incident, but has yet to attend any of my Q’s this week. So as the kids say, Google me. As I type this, our department has experienced two officer involved shootings in 2 days. I was one of the first officers arriving at the active shooter yesterday at the Target store. I found myself more tired than usual last night and I believe the adrenalin of the day and the totality of everything finally caught up to me. These new incidents always bring a flood of emotions and add in the anniversary of my shooting and it could be easy to be overwhelmed by emotions. The week o’ Farva is my way of ensuring I will have support and be around my brothers during a week that is always difficult for me. Exercise has always been what has helped me deal with stress and anxiety and this group has truly been life savings so I am thankful for all of you. After my incident I had a lot of anger towards the suspect.  Anger is never healthy and usually just makes the problem worse. As time has passed, I have decided to choose forgiveness over anger. I forgive him for trying to harm myself and my partner and I and pray for him often. Remember to forgive your enemies and pray for them as often as you pray for family, friends, and strangers.

YHC was not sure if the group had ever run to the Papillion water tower, but we decided to run that path on this particular day. We headed down Halleck Park Road to East Halleck Street and then south on 84th street. We followed 84th street south and G String tripped on a frozen snow pile and took a spill near Highland Street. G String and I had a great chat before the fall about my incident that was the genesis of the week o’ Farva. This was expected after calling him out on the previous day’s backblast. But back to the fall, it was very graceful, but I prefer to call it tactical. He fell but immediately rolled and popped back up with no problems. Swiper would later coin the phrase “Stop, Drop, and G” to describe the tumble. This is the stuff that make these mornings memorable.  We reached HWY 370 before heading east in the field along the side of the road. The footing here was difficult, but not impossible and we all survived. It was actually more treacherous when I tested the route because of ice and snow. We stopped at the water tower and waved, but G String demanded we do 15 big boys while we waited for the 6. Freed to lead and we are better for it. We passed by the water tower before making it to 90th street and turning back north towards Lincoln Road. We made a slight detour west on Sherman Street before taking Frontier Street back to Lincoln Road. We followed Lincoln Road back to Halleck Road and finally back to the flags. Firewalker also took a spill as we made the final turn to the flags. He was not happy about it and will probably be mad I mentioned it, but he won’t read this anyways. The PAX ended up with at least 4+ miles. G String pointed out that our Strava map will probably look like a gun. In fact, it actually does but this was not my intention. Sky Q definitely has a sense of humor. Special thanks to Stripes for catching a flight to Sarpy for his inaugural visit to the sandlot/steel mill/pit.

It is important to look back on the past and grow from it and try not to make the same mistakes. Even though that was a very tough time in my life, I learned a lot about myself and the areas I needed to improve. It also made me a lot more thankful for everything in my life and to never take anything for granted. I challenge you to make reflection a habit so we reap the full benefits of growing from the past.

Thang:

This was my sixth day straight of leading and I was officially out of original ideas…. or was I?  YHC was inspired by a run that a few PAX had been calling the “Love” run. I decided to add to this run and perhaps a double meaning to “Make Love”. The justification for this name can be seen on any Strava or Garmin map. After a few attempts, I felt that near perfection had been reached. YHC would lead the PAX on the “Make Love” run, but with a few additions. Running during the entire workout was the goal, with maybe a couple exercises. We “head”ed around the papio bay loop to accomplish our first mile. A small slit into the parking lot between the baseball fields to find a fence perfect for 17 dips and 17 durkins. 17 is my favorite number and 1717 is my badge number. The papio bay loop was completed and we headed down Halleck Park Road. We followed Halleck Park Road to Lincoln Road and then to South Harrison Street and headed south, nobody got left behind or “shafted” on this section. We followed South Harrison Street to Valley Road, this stretch could be considered the base of our run. The route took us northeast on Valley Road, in a “roundabout” way, until we reached 84th street. No PAX were sagging on this section, but all were hanging freely (sometimes with support and sometimes without). We followed 84th street to East Halleck Street. East Halleck Street would take us back to Halleck Park. The run got pretty hard here, but never fully hard. Since we were ahead of schedule, thanks to a strong group of HIM runners, we decided to head down the Papio Bay loop again. We squirted off the path about halfway to reach a perfect spot for a couple exercises. We performed 10 pickle pushers (with eye contact of course, Chernobyl’s suggestion) and 7 slurpees. Low Flow claimed these seemed like regular speed burpees, but sometimes it is hard to control your speed when excited. We all felt the euphoria of a job well finished, but we continued the Papio Bay loop back to the flags. Our refractory periods aren’t what they used to be so we called it good for what Schrute would probably call a “morning activity” session. None of the PAX would consider this a flaccid run, but maybe semi-hard? We always picked up the 6, like we always do. Although, I hear 6 is the average length of this kind of run. I kind of felt bad making the PAX run almost the entire beatdown, but it was great to see everyone accomplish the finish line. Maybe some that did not think they could do it or had no idea what kind of workout they were in store for. This was the week o’ Farva and therefore all rules were out the window The PAX ended up with 5+ miles. Props to Magnolia for powering through a “longish” run and thanks to Speed Square and Tight Lip for making their “virgin” trip to the Pit. I hear that you never forget your first time. I hope that is true for day 6 of the week o’ Farva.

I gave a short recap of everything I focused on this week and that I talked about Reflection on Thursday. My OIS was six years ago and I don’t even recognize the man I was then. I also just think about how much I have changed in the last year because of this group. I have tackled some amazing physical challenges that I didn’t think I could accomplish and probably wouldn’t have without the support of this group.  I also was intimidated to lead at this time last year. I still remember where I was running around the duck pond when I asked Swiper when I would be ready to lead. I also remember the support from KOA as he gave me a nudge to VQ at the sandlot. Leading is now something I have learned to love and actually seek out leadership roles. (Hence this last week). If we continue to consistently choose to do hard things, then the hard things become easier and we search for even harder things. It is never too late to change and we all can do it, but it is so much easier with support. Thank you all. Sarpy swagger and Sarpy savagery is alive and well. I love all you savages!
