PAX (10): KOA, Schnapps, Red Ranger, Ear Tag, Baby Shark, Borat, Squeaky Clean, Knobs, Schrute, Sister Act

Q: Sister Act

YHC has never been to The Sandlot, for one because Sarpy AOs are a little far, but also because running isn’t really a strong point. But, after some SiteQ conversations with KOA, I decided getting down to The Sandlot would be a great way to push myself, meet some new PAX, and hopefully let some Swagger rub off onto me. The 0510 arrival saw lots of cars in the lot already – rucks and pre-runs were well attended this morning. I planted the flag and greeted PAX as they arrived.

At 0530, PAX were welcomed, the mission was stated with the 5 core principles, disclaimer, and credo. A few Warm-a-Rama exercises were done, and we headed out.

The 3.5 mile run followed Lincoln to 84th, up to the Papio trail, to the trail that leads back to Lincoln, and back to the AO. Along the way, we stopped for some pain stations, creating a nice string of pearls.

  • 20 merkins
  • 20 Bobby Hurleys
  • 20 Alternating Shoulder Taps IC
  • 10 Burpees

Once we made it back to the flags, we circled up for two rounds of Sarpy Slammers Rancid style, and we were done! Made it!

PRAYERS: remember those bruised up, pray for safety now that there’s a lot of guys getting back out, and reach out to those banged up or that you haven’t seen for a while!

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Brick Builder donations if you’re not participating, Friday night at Patty McGowens (or Sister Act’s show at Stories…),

COT:

I was nervous about leading today – really just b/c I don’t consider myself a runner and there was some pressure there. I used the word “terrified” kind of as a joke as some do, and that got me thinking – how did we get from terrified to terrific? They have the same roots, but have come to mean very different things!

There’s a show on NPR called A Way With Words – they talk about the etymology of words and phrases, and to me it’s fascinating. So I thought I’d do a little digging on the terrified thing. Turns out, a cousin to terrible is horrible, terrified is horrified, and terrific is horrific. But terrific and horrific differ in that one has stayed true to its roots, the other not.

Terrified went through a gradual lessening of intensity – coming to mean intense, excessive, severe first. Then 200 years after its first usage, it ended up as we know it: an enthusiastic term of commendation: amazing, impressive; excellent, exceedingly good, splendid. Man I love this stuff.

Anyway – the point is this: like the word terrific, things in your life might start with bad connotation. Maybe once upon a time that was the term “working out.” Haha. But really – I know for me there was a time where “guy friends” wasn’t all that great of a term because I didn’t have many, and a lot of times felt awkward around other men. Now, F3 has provided me so many “guy friends” that I desperately need in my life. What about these words tho? Faith. Integrity. Emotional. Open minded. Have any words like these morphed into things that are really positive now? Spend some time thinking about that!

I thought this Q was going to be on the terrifying side. Turns out it was terrific.

Aye!
