YHC welcomed an impressively large group to the Gloom of the Maize as yet more PAX emerged from the darkness. I shared the mission and motto, gave a disclaimer about safety, and then, shared an exhortation: As always, F3 is You vs You, BUT give your all today. The only way to progress is to push against your limits. Do not half-ass something you can whole ass!
Warm-O-Rama
Nope, we warmed up by moseying to the hill east of the shovel flags where the Thang was all set up.
The Thang: Sandbag Grinder
YHC had the PAX count off into 4 groups and explained the simple 4 station grinder that was set out.
At station 1 lay six 60lb sandbags, the PAX would alternate between Bear Crawl drags and Throws up the hill with the sandbags, carry them down, and then do 5 sandbag burpees (a personal favorite) before pushing to station #2.
Station 2- AMRAP Abs
- Big Boys
- LBCs
- Flutter Kicks
- American Hammers
Station 3- AMRAP Legs
- Hydraulic Squats
- Sumo Squats
- Copperhead Squats
- Johnny Drama
Station 4- AMRAP Shoulders/Chest
- Cherry Pickers
- Merkins
- Overhead Claps
- Werkins
The PAX was able to complete 3 rounds before Omaha was called and we moved on to the Post Thang, we carried the bags back to the flags as a team and moved on to 6 Minutes of Mary.

GrowRucks are hard. As a matter of fact, they’re damn near impossible. They’re uncomfortable, you have a 45lb backpack on for 15 hours. You’re constantly pushed to your limits, you’re tired, exhausted even, you’re wet, you’re cold, and you’re carrying heavy things for long periods of time. People around you are groaning, morale often gets low.
You may be asking me “Why in God’s name do you do it then?!?”
I mentioned it briefly before we got started this morning. Pushing past where you think your limit is leads to exponential growth!
Do you want to get a better max on your Merkin reps? Gotta keep pushing that limit.
Do you want your children to grow up to be great humans? You have to be uncomfortable. Disciplining them is hard, but necessary. As they get older, you have to have tough conversations.
Do you want to build a business? You have to step out of comfort and take a risk!
So, why do I do GrowRucks?
I look at each even as a modern-day vision quest. In each one, I have had some life-changing “vision”. At GTE-19 I learned something huge about my relationship with myself and my inner dialogue, At GTE-23 I learned something revolutionary about my Jester, and at GTE-28 this past weekend I learned something about my relationship with my M and my Shorties. Each time, I come home a better man, a better husband, dad, and leader. I come home feeling renewed and reinvigorated to press harder into my discomfort and growth.
Maybe you say GrowRuck isn’t for you, I will respectfully disagree, but I will give you that. My exhortation then is to attack your limits with reckless abandon, destroy your comfort zone and find that next level!
Be Blessed! ~Rollbar
