5:00 am Pre Pre Run: Break Room, E-85 (His dog) and Swiper
5:30 am The first annual Josh lead beatdown is finally here. MegaJosh, battle the Joshes or Joshies. Swiper, Amedeous, Smashmouth, Chernobyl, Beaver, Safe Ride, Scoober FedEx, and Uncle Jesse. It was super exciting. I got the idea about a year ago and started floating it to a few Josh’s like Cherynobyl and Hard Hat. Unfortunately Hard Hat had to bail and Longneck is a Tuesday siteQ. But at the last minute I got FedEx and I was really happy with 9. I finally landed on just going with Oct 10 once I got the date from Honey Maid. It was centrally located and a great site. I got there around 4:50 am, and Q-Tip said, there you are. He told me someone was already setting up. Amadeous who just rolled in from Chicago. The pre run was fast, with Break Room and E-85. We were talking on the pre run, about how Honey Maid just had a kid, 5 days ago and so he would not be at the beatdown. Break Room also mentioned that Black Lung just had a child and he likely would not be there as well. I thought, “Well that’s good – he won’t be there to screw up all of my Josh competitions by winning them”…. We arrived back early as it is a shorter pre run, which was perfect to get out cones, etc. We were all set and Joshes were rolling in out of the woodwork. Beaver had the idea to all wear red. It was glorious. Everyone wore red, except Husker loving Chernobyl. Beaver said he had an extra red shirt. Clutch. I surveyed the Pax, no Honey Maid as expected. But I did see Black Lung, oh boy, the stakes just got higher. Then I saw Black Lung dress differently and had to do a double take, it was Canary. This was the first time I met him. So not only was Black actually there, now the Joshes had to battle two super hero’s, plus a bunch of other young fit dudes. Awesome. I jumped right in with who we are, F3 – Fitness, Fellowship and Faith – reminding them of the mission to Plant, Serve and Grow small workout groups for the invigoration of male community leadership.
I then covered the 5 core principles of F3. 1) Open to ALL men. 2. Always Free. 3) Always held outdoors, 4) Lead in a rotating fashion and 5) Ends with a Circle of Trust (COT).
There were no FNGs today.
Credo: Leave no man behind, but leave no man where you found him.
I then mentioned to the PAX that I am not a professional and today would have a lot of very hard things. Modify as necessary. Today’s workout is based off of the Josh Battle in Lincoln, NE or the MegaJosh event. We would modify and have some competitions, Joshes vs. Non-Joshes.
We ran on to the field to warm up. Amadeus would put on the curated Josh Playlist.
5:33 am Warm-a-rama
We ran to the center of the field and I kicked it to Beaver for:
- 15 Goofballs IC
- 15 Imperial Walkers IC
- 10 Beaver Merkins
- 15 Tappy Taps IC
Then Uncle Jesse took over for:
- 10 Big Ones IC
- 10 Toy Soldiers IC
5:42 am Pre Thang
Amadeus had a bunch of great suggestions, one of them was that when he thinks of me, he thinks of Motivators.
What better way then to kick off the Josh Beatdown. Let’s do 10! So we did 10 Motivators IC. And I got a lot of compliments on a flawless cadenance. Tired!
5:52 am Thang – The Josh Battle
We Launched into the competitions. I informed the men if a Non-Josh beats all of the Joshes in any event, he would earn free coffee today only, at the Village Grinder, preferrably from the Top Josh to lose.

- Balls to the wall with your legs on your partners shoulders, while he squatted. We had an odd number of Joshes so I went Solo. Pax fell off and it was Chernobyl and Smashmouth vs. guess who, Black Lung and Canary. I called a tie at 3 minutes.
- Most Merkins – Pax started going – I got to 57 and was feeling pretty out of shape. Pax randomly stopped and guess who was still going? Black Lung and Chernobyl. Chernobyl got to 91. Black Lung stopped shortly after – but wasn’t counting and was doing some hand release. The competitions was to do as many as you could. Joshes win.
- Tug of War – 14 v 9 Joshes. Some big strong Pax on the Non-Josh side. We got dominated. Non Joshes Win.
- Ultimate Frisbee – Maybe the highlight of the morning. We played a 5 minute game or so. I think I had the best throw of my life to a sprinting Smashmouth in the endzone – the Frisbee bender in the air like I was a Jedi Master. Off Smashmouth’s hand, turnover. The game ended in 1-1 Tie.
- 800m Sprint. We took off and the pace was fast. At the end Black Lung proved too much for Smashmouth. Smash ran the 800m at a 5:11/mile pace, so in about 2:35 for 800m. Black Lung beat him by about 10 seconds. Fire. Non Joshes Win.

For 6 minutes of Mary (that was more like 3 mins):
- Chilcut Plank for 3 Mins – Safe Ride led us in the middle, while the Josh Playlist played on Amadeus’s loud speaker. I added a song at the last minute. Josh Groban’s “Believe” and it came on just in time for the planking. It was glorious. Safe Ride was a stiff as a board with perfect form. It was a tie with many Joshes and Non-Joshes recovering with moans and groans

Josh is one of the most amazing guys you’d ever meet. Simply because he is honest, hilarious, witty, responsible, mature, selfless, wise and very caring.
From there, like most things Urban Dictionary, it devolves into some descriptions you may find more fitting for some of us…
In April if 2021 – approximately 900 Joshes joined together in Lincoln for the Josh fight. This was a sense of community brought together this amazing group of individuals for a common purpose. By definition community is a group of people having a particular characteristic in common – like a name. In addition they raised over 10k in money to help the Omaha and Lincoln communities.
Today – that same sense of community brought us all together to the coliseum. The group of Josh’s always has a community. As we sit around name-o-ramas you hear many a Josh. And we all have a special bond. But todays bond is bigger than just being named Josh
Today our community is about F3 – the second part of F3 I’d fellowship which helps build community. F3 Omaha does some amazing things – heartland hope, blood drives, Chris Gradoville Scholarship, and it goes on and on. We support each other when we fall down and pick up each other especially when we are the 6.
Another definition of community is “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals”
As you go through the week remember your community. Not just your F3 community but all the communities you interact with!

***as I was leaving the field I was talked to Chernobyl and he stopped me and told me that he found a Penny. And it reminded him of his cousin Alex who passed away. His favorite color was red and he was always doing fundraisers, canned food drives and he had a thing for picking up loose change, often pennies. The Red shirts and the penny were a subtle reminder that he is watching.
