Circle of Trust:   Overcoming difficult times

Matthew 26:36-39

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

These verses point out several things to me:

  1. Jesus knew the pain that he was about to endure.  Physical pain for sure, but also the anguish from separation from God and having to take on the sins of the world.
  1. He didn’t want to do it.  He asked for the cup to be taken from him.  He was overwhelmed knowing this.
  1. I feel like the most important part is “Yet not as I will, but as you will”.

That last part is so powerful.  We often pray for our will to be done.  I pray that I get the job I put in for.  I pray that I get that bonus at work.  I pray that my marriage is healed.  I pray for healing of a loved one. It is easy to pray this way because we all know God is a good God and he wants what’s best for us and we assume if these things come true, that is what is best for us.  But God is all-knowing as well.  He knows the big picture.  He looks from an eternal point of view.  We have to trust in God…even in the most difficult of situations and pray that His will is done.
