QIC: Gator

Prerunners (8): Barn Door, Cheap Seats, Roadhouse, Big One, Chiclets (Respect), The Curse, and Gator. Oh, and Blades of Glory coming in shoeless and hot at exactly 5:00…

Two days before my VQ I was on a prerun with Roadhouse. I asked him for some advice on Q’ing and he kindly obliged. But he also went a step further and invited me to Q at Trident. We compared schedules later and I found myself arriving at 4:46 this morning for my first Trident Q – thanks, Roadhouse.

Greeting

In YHC’s best Sean Connery voice, YHC welcomed the PAX to F3 and The Trident. Returning to the Q’s usual voice, we covered our mission statement; the five core principles; credo, and disclaimer. No FNGs, so we mozy to the far side parking lot.

Warm-A-Rama

Whether you triple murphed it or enjoyed the holiday, there was a need to shake the Labor Day hangover. So, we dialed things up a few notches with the following:

SSH x 20 IC

Diamond Merkins x 20

Jump Squats x 15

Mountain Climbers x 15 IC

Monkey Humpers x 15 IC

And then another mozy back to the parking lot. A reminder to the Q to always pick up the six, and the PAX were ready.

The Pre-Thang: The SOBS

YHC explained that we would do a Series Of Burpees by Sixes – or S.O.B.S. That is, slowly, 1 – down to crouching position; 2- feet jump back and hold plank; 3- down merkin; 4- up merkin; 5- feet forward to return to crouch, and 6- jump up.

SOBS x 6

Then walking lunges across the short side of the grass rectangle

SOBS x 6 (with some help from Mufasa)

            Then return via bear crawl

And then one more SOBS x 6

Now it was time for the Thang…

The Thang: BAMFS

YHC threw a movie trivia question out to the group:

What is written on the wallet of Samuel L. Jackson in the 1994 Quentin Tarantino masterpiece ‘Pulp Fiction’?

Several responses were correctomundo. YHC will simply abbreviate here as “BAMF”

With that, YHC had the PAX count off in teams of 4. Two pax would run around the rectangle twice while the other two completed the following exercises:

Bobby hurley’s x 10

Alternating shoulder taps x 15 IC

Merkins x 20

Freddie mercuries x 25 IC

Squats x 30

By the time the Q called OMAHA, we made it through about 4 rounds (One Mile; 400 total reps – these PAX are tough SOBS and truly BAMFS!). Time for…

6-M-O-M

Starting on our six, we did…

Death Rolls x 10 IC

In plank we did…

Gator Spears x 10 IC (right arm)

Gator Spears x 10 IC (left arm)

Lastly, we held elbow plank and did

Gator Tails x 10 IC (right leg out)

Gator Tails x 10 IC (left leg out)

We finished and did

Count Off and Name-A-Rama

COT:

Gator asked a Trivia Question:

Today is the birthday of a famous artist that did not begin painting until she was in her 70s. Who?

Answer:

Grandma Moses, (Anna Mary Robertson Moses) born September 7, 1860

In her 70s, her husband died, so she started doing embroidery to fill her days. But she got arthritis and was unable to continue her new hobby. A friend encouraged her to try painting instead. She started showing her art at fairs and even started selling them for $3-$5. Then she was discovered and later sold them for $8,000-$10,000. In 2006, one of her paintings sold for $1.2 million!

She was prolific: over 1500 paintings until she died at the age of 101. A life well lived.

There are many things we can take from this. Last week, Swiper’s message at The Trident was that it’s never too late. A septuagenarian beginning a successful career as an artist certainly hits that note. To me, the most inspiring part of the story is the person that encouraged Grandma Moses to take up painting. That encouragement to try painting was the catalyst for greatness. It’s a reminder that our positive messages of encouragement to someone can really make a difference in their life.

So, Happy Birthday to Grandma Moses and thank you PAX for letting me lead today.

Roadhouse took us out in prayer.
