COT –  Being Alone

So, although it’s my namesake, I am rarely ever home alone. With three kids 9, 7, and 5 we are always running somewhere, with family, or entertaining kids. To think that before I met my wife and had kids I spent roughly 4 years on my own. It was great, but it wasn’t fulfilling. I remember many nights in my two bedroom apartment in Wahoo thinking about what others may be doing.

Truth be told now, if I do get time alone at home, or if there are nights where my wife is gone and the kids are asleep, I almost feel bored. Even worse, sometimes when I’m alone, I have too many options to be able to actually pick something to do.

God doesn’t want us to be alone. In Gensis Chapter 2 Verse 18 the lord god said “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him”. Of course this was Eve, but also in terms of fellowship the bible states in John Chaper 1 Verses 6 and 7 – “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie, and do not live out the truth, 7 – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his son, purifies us all from sin”.

Maybe in less extremes there is a better verse. I prefer Proverbs 27 verse 17 “as iron sharpens Iron, so one man sharpens another”. I’m sharper in fellowship. I enjoy people. Loneliness has its place. When I’m upset, I want to be alone. My wife and I were discussing the other day our oldest when he’s upset often runs to his room. We have to give him space. Leave him alone. It’s okay to do things by yourself, but life was meant to be shared. Shared experiences are often the best experiences.

As CS Lewis once stated “The next best thing to being wise oneself is to live in a circle of those who are” Thanks for being my circle, thanks for keeping me wise.

Prayers for Vespa, Ryan, Hank, Bogeys friend from High School, Armando’s cousin Allison
