At some point in my career, someone (or some book) told me to focus on efficiency w/tasks and effectiveness w/people/relationships. In 2013, I went through a leadership development program that included a 360-degree review. One of the common themes in the responses is that I was someone you could go to when you really needed to get things done, but I wasn’t afraid to run over people to get it done. I’ve always been a very relational person, but when it came to work and getting things done, I had an extreme focus on task and efficiency.
I still fall victim to this – I was hope w/a sick kid this week, and he had an absolute meltdown that daddy was staying home w/him and not mommy. At first I chalked it up to him just being tired, sick and whiny… but he said “mommy does fun things with me!” And I thought, “well that’s true… she’s always going out of her way to play with them, and I’m perfectly content letting them play as long as they’re content…” And then he said “dad is just on his computer/phone doing work the whole time!” And that was a slap in the face and a stark reminder that I can’t focus on efficiency w/my kids. Even if he seems perfectly happy playing and watching TV all day (and I feel good I’m getting work done), that isn’t effective. And they notice!
