COT.
I showed the PAX a picture of me standing next to the headstone with my name and DOB. That headstone is located at Evergreen Cemetery near 78th and West Center Rd. I used the picture for shock value to illustrate my point that men, especially those of us with wives and children, need to prepare for the possibility that our death may be earlier than we hope or expect.
My father owned a funeral home in Schuyler, and my brother has been a Funeral Director in Omaha for 50 years. We have seen many situations of a parent, or even both parents, losing their lives in an accident. Those occurrences are tragic, and their families are surely devastated. But as the leader of your family, you can take steps now so that you don’t add to the misery your family will experience.
- The most basic thing you should do is have life insurance. It doesn’t really matter if you want term insurance or whole life, you need to assure your family can get by without your income for several years. If you don’t have life insurance, you are a Dumb Ass. You need to leave now and buy some life insurance today.
- You also need to have a will. To avoid delays to your family of having access to your savings and investments, you need to specify your heirs in writing. There are countless stories of families fighting over estates, its almost cliché. Put it in writing.
- Make a list of your investments and savings with account numbers, companies, contacts, passwords, etc. so that your wife or heirs can easily find and access funds as soon as they are needed.
- Know what you want to do for a funeral. Maybe you just want to be cremated and have your ashes scattered. Fine. Write it down and make sure your family knows your wishes. Just remember—a funeral is not really about you. It’s a way for a community to gather to show support to your family. We all hope people will speak well of us after we die, but YOU WONT BE THERE TO HEAR IT.
These are just basic things you should do to protect your family.
We finished with a prayer.
