COT- My Story
Some of you may be familiar with my story, but for those of you who are not, here is who I am. On September 4, 2021, my older brother Mark and nephew Taylor were killed in an auto accident on their way to a Husker football game. Mark was 41 and Taylor was 7. The moment I received the phone call confirming they had passed, my entire life changed. My role as a son, father, husband, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle was all in a spin cycle. The next 3-4 weeks comprised the hardest decisions and situations I have ever experienced. Some of these decisions and conversations are still with me today, such as calling a dentist to get the dental records of a 7-year-old, to confirm identity. I hung up the phone and then called another dentist for the same for my brother. Sudden and unexpected death leaves you with a lot of uncomfortable and difficult decisions to make in a very short amount of time.
The only way I knew how to handle this was to put my head down and do what was needed for everyone around me. I would figure out me at another time. As you all know, this is not the healthiest way to handle the situation and I had a panic attack on September 28th. 2 days later, a good friend, Chris Gradoville, aka Nugent, was killed. A few days later, another panic attack happened, and I finally was honest and told my wife what was happening and that I needed help.
She immediately helped me to get set up with a therapist to help sort through everything that had happened over the last month. It took me a couple more weeks before I was able to process what happened in September 2021.
I share this with you today not for sympathy but to encourage you to ask for help. It is my nature to solve problems, but I don’t always have the tools to solve them. We need to be better at reaching out to someone and asking for help or letting them know you are struggling. Many people are willing to help, but you have to ask.
Salute to you men! Larry Legend
