YHC — Thomas

On several trips up and down F Street I had seen a nice hill to the east of the Maize and was looking forward to my next Q opportunity to put it to good use.  Today would be the day, and I stopped to place some lights and exercise instructions before the beatdown.  As I approached I saw a line of pre-runners making their way down F street, getting in a little extra before the beatdown.  Lilypad and I pulled into the parking lot that was already quite full.  As we gathered with the others that were near the shovel flags, we saw some pre-runners split off to the Labryinth and T-Ball said he was off to grab coffee for his M as today was their anniversary.  At 5:30 sharp I welcomed the other 16 PAX to the Maize, shared the mission, core principles, credo and disclaimer as well as the hope that we’d hear some train whistles this morning. With that, we began a mosey around the parking lot and headed to the basketball court for warm-a-rama.

At the conclusion of warmarama I had the PAX pair up and we began the mosey over to the east hill for the Thang.

The Thang:

I shared that today’s beatdown was a Norsky themed beatdown to honor my Grandfather who had passed away earlier in the week.  He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and so I chose to use the words FJORDS and LEFSE for the beatdown.  This would be similar to BOMBS or BLIMPS.  The partners would have one member start the first exercise while the other ran up the hill and back.  Upon returning the second member would resume the exercise at whatever count and continue till all reps were complete, and then move on to the next exercise.  The PAX would continue through both words and then rinse and repeat as necessary.

COT

A few months back I shared in a COT that my grandma had passed.  And while I was sad to lose her, I had peace in that she had lived a good life and was ready for heaven.  But on the day of her services what really hit me was seeing my grandpa’s tears and the love that he had for her.  This past week I lost that grandpa.

He had a good life, and was immensely proud of his family.  He valued hard work, education, love for family and the Good Lord.  He was also proud of his Norwegian heritage (his parents immigrated to South Dakota from Norway in the early 20th century).

If I’m being honest, throughout my life, he was the one person that I never wanted to let down.  I share his last name, and any missteps I took reflected on his name.  But he had unconditional love, and knew that none of us were perfect, though that didn’t mean he didn’t push us to be better.

I didn’t agree with him on everything, but I knew where he came from.  His generation experienced things that my generation and younger really can’t fathom.

I’ll miss him, but am blessed to have known him for 43 years.  And I know that he’ll continue to influence me in my years to come.  I pray that I can provide that same positive influence in my family and community.

With that I took us out in prayer.

Aye!

Thomas
