Circle of Trust (COT):

I have an 18 year old son and a 15 year old daughter. My daughter will be 16 in December and she wants to practice driving often because she is looking forward to getting her driver’s license. When my son was learning to drive, I was NOT a very good driving instructor. I was short with him and I am sure I was on edge when he was driving. As a result, my wife was the primary driving instructor for my son Jack. So because of my poor attitude and inability to relax, I lost out on time with my son as he learned to drive. And who knows, maybe I could have taught him something. At first I was the same exact way when my daughter started to drive, and she told me that she would rather drive with her mother. I had not learned a thing.

And then something happened in my life that made me stop and reflect on my attitude, and made me realize I need to do better. So one day I brought my daughter to the Burke High School Parking lot and we drove around the parking lot and the school. We practiced parking, backing up, and we drove around the neighborhood a little. There were sudden stops, wide and narrow turns, a few curb checks, and some improvement in her driving skills. Since then I have driven multiple times in town with her and sure I have occasionally clutched the grab handle above the door, and sometimes I feel as if I am going to put my foot through the car’s floor, but I tried to remain calm and explain the basics of driving.

So what did I learn? I learned that I can control my attitude, and basically, I just need to chill out. As much as I believe F3 has helped me to be a better husband, father and man over the past 3 years, I was not recognizing my poor attitude in this instance as needing improvement. But by reflecting on what is really important in life, I came to realize that time spent with my loved ones is very important, and my cruddy attitude was getting in the way of this. I know there is still room for improvement, but I feel I have become better at taking a deep breath, smiling, and adjusting my attitude. In the long run, I think this will allow me to more quality time with my family and friends.

Thank you.

We ended in prayer.
