THANG: BILLY MADISON ENROLLS AT SWANSON ELEMENTARY

The PAX gathered at the playground at the bottom of the grassy knoll. YHC shared that Billy Madison had to graduate 12 grades to get his diploma and since we were at Swanson Elementary, it seemed we needed to be put to the same test. Folsom voiced his desire to co-Q on his birthday, so YHC chose Folsom to lead us through the workout. Each exercise was followed by a sprint up the grassy knoll. The exercises progressed by building on each exercise round-by-round.

COT: MY FAVORITE TEACHER IN SCHOOL WAS A LUNCH LADY

YHC passed around a photo of my favorite teacher, Nellie the lunch-lady. Being at Swanson Elementary, I thought about this lunch lady. Nellie was my grandmother who lived to be 99 years old. The photo I shared was her playing wiffle ball at 95 years old on Mother’s Day. The photo shows her making contact despite being legally blind.

Nellie taught me more life lessons than any teacher. She made me a very popular student at my elementary school. She was generous with hugs and praise. I am confident that every person in my graduating class could still tell you my grandmother’s name as she showered love on all the students at Bradie Shrum Elementary School.

Nellie never drove a car in her life. She probably never made more than $16,000/year and she was a widow for more than 20 years. She taught me about joy. I have never met anyone more joyful than Grandma Nellie – she epitomized fellowship. She loved people. As she got older, her vision and hearing got worse. She only stood 4’11” before osteoporosis. By the time, she died she was probably closer to 4’6″. I remember taking her so many places where people would approach her, and she had no idea who she was speaking with. Without even knowing who they were, she would look up at them and greet them with a hug.

I am reminded of her and her welcoming spirit when thinking about our F3 culture. We hug or fist-pump both familiar PAX members and strangers. I am grateful to have the opportunity to hold recess every morning with my fellow brothers of the gloom. Like Nellie, I wake up every morning ready to go somewhere to be with my people. She taught me that is where to find joy.

We wrapped with a prayer.

Grace & Peace,

Wait Time
