COT (Toto/Al Borland)
[Toto] A lot of you know this story already but I’m going to share about it for those that may not. February of last year, Al Borland’s son Callum had a brain tumor removed. Callum was 11 months old at the time. I remember Al Borland sharing this news with us here at The Berm. It had only been a few days after finding out about it himself and only having shared the news with close family. When he shared with the Pax that day, Al was shaken, but STRONG. We prayed for Callum that morning. Al soon after shared the news on the 3rd F channel on Slack. I think in hopes to seek out options and advice for Callum.
Within a day another F3 Pax, Thomas, reached out to Al Borland with a name of a Pediatric Brain Surgeon in Memphis who performed a similar operation on his own son. Al made contact and was on their way to Memphis with in just a couple days. Surgery was performed just 10 days after they found the tumor. When news of a successful removal found its way to the Pax it was a great relief and blessing to hear.
I can only imagine how tough those 10 days must have been. AB showed me a lot of strength and resolve and he showed me the type of man, husband and father that I aspire to be. Since that time, I have continued to watch AB accelerate in all three of those categories as evidence by your commitment to give back to the community like the SammyStrong Foundation where this summer you helped raise money and assist in a 5k and Home Run Derby fund raisers for victims of pediatric brain cancer. AB It’s an honor and a privilege to pass this shovel to you and I look forward to reaping the rewards of your leadership here at The Berm.
[Al Borland] I had plans for COT about “acceleration”—and it’s a good one. However after hearing the kind words from Toto I thought it better to cut straight to the chase. Bottom line, a lot of people, a lot of HIM’s right here in this group have gone through struggles like what my family has experienced. I say that not to minimize my family’s journey but highlight the strength and inspiration that I have drawn from the PAX. You all have shown me the way, been vulnerable, shared your experiences and your personal battles—everything from fighting necrotizing fasciitis to your own personal battles with cancer, addiction and all the other challenges life throws our way.
Over the past year, Toto has been a great leader for the Berm and F3 Omaha. He’s a true HIM, a friend and an inspiration to me. He is a friend to anyone fast enough to keep up with him and even if you’re not you’ll find him back at the shovel flags waiting with a smile and fist bump. When he asked me about the shovel flag, I was honored but fairly sure he had made a mistake.
My favorite memory at the Berm was a Wait Time led workout. Our fearless Q led the PAX on a mosey through the apartment complex grounds where the mumble chatter got a little loud for one local resident. We returned to the Berm for the “Thang”- which involved lifting and carrying 50lb duct taped bags of an unknown substance. Shortly after commencing the exercise a rather large and angry man came marching across the street. He was apparently upset with us. Upon his arrival to the shovel flags, angry and clearly confused, he requested to speak to our commander. It was dark but you could see Toto’s eyes get big when he realized he was the commander. Toto managed to talk down our angry neighbor and almost closed the deal on an EH. In commemoration of that morning I presented Toto with a limited edition, one of a kind, “Commander Toto” F3 patch.
To Toto- thanks for your leadership, your friendship and the example you set for all the PAX. Keep Accelerating and SYIG!
