Circle of Trust: Addicted to the Right Things
(Full Article on The Archer here)
Seven years ago today, I was addicted, but it wasn’t to anything good. My life was driven by habits and desires that were killing me from the inside out. But by God’s grace, He didn’t just take away those addictions, He gave me new ones. I’ve become addicted to loving my wife, to being present with my kids, to serving others, to sharpening men in this circle, and to pushing my body through exercise instead of destroying it. And let me tell you… this kind of addiction is life-giving.
Scripture:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” – Romans 12:2
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” – John 8:36
AA Connection:
In AA, we say: “One day at a time.” Sobriety isn’t about white-knuckling your way through life, it’s about replacing old patterns with new ones. Step 12 talks about carrying the message and practicing these principles in all our affairs. That’s exactly what I try to do every day, carry the message by the way I live, love, and serve.
Q-Source Tie-In:
Jester – In F3, the Jester is that thing that can take you out if you let it. Mine used to be drugs and alcohol. But you can’t just kill a Jester, you’ve got to replace it with something worthy.
Living Third – My new “addictions” force me to put God and others before myself. That’s what keeps me free.
Discipline – Sobriety isn’t a finish line. It’s a daily discipline, just like showing up here in the gloom.
Reflection:
Every one of us is addicted to something, it might not be substances, but it might be comfort, distraction, or approval. The question is, are you addicted to things that destroy you or things that strengthen you?
Call to Action: Today, I challenge you to swap a destructive habit for a healthy one. Replace an old Jester with something that points you toward God, your family, and your purpose. One day at a time, keep becoming addicted to the right things.
Addicted to the Right Things
I once was chained to poisoned lies,
That promised life but left me dry.
Each drink, each hit, a fading flame,
A hollow man, a hollow name.
But grace broke in, my aim was changed,
The bow I held was rearranged.
Now arrows fly at truer marks
At faith, at love, at holy sparks.
Addicted now to my dear bride,
To laughing children by my side.
To sweat and strain, to serve and fight,
To brothers sharpening me right.
The Jester stalks, but I won’t fall,
My aim is fixed, I hear the call.
For better chains now hold my hands
The kind the Son Himself commands.
AYE!
The Plague
