Circle of Trust: Slow down the years!
I’m a task oriented person. I wake up in the morning with a checklist in my head of things that need to be accomplished. As I go through the day I check those things off and success is based on checking those items off the list. Every once in a while something hits you that reminds you that life moves too quickly and sometimes you need to scrap the check boxes for the day, reflect, and just enjoy the moment.
I was recently at work. I’ve been there for going on 12 years. There is a woman named Barb that I work with and she retired. Her last day was this past Monday. I was sitting there thinking good for her, I’m a bit jealous, but I’m glad she gets to stop working and gets to move on to the next part of her life where she can do what she wants without the daily grind.
Right after this thought I had a flashback to shortly after I started with the company and a guy named Al retired. Barb worked in the same quad cube area that he did and they were work friends. I was sitting there thinking about Barb and what that day must have been like for her when Al retired. She was probably thinking, good for him and a bit jealous that he was retiring and thinking that it would be a long time before she was in a position to do that. Barb is about 12 years older than me so as I was sitting there thinking about this it hit me that those 12 years from when Al retired to Monday when Barb retired seemed to fly by in a blink of an eye. It won’t be long before I’m the person people are wishing farewell to and may even be a little jealous of…at least temporarily. But, knowing the speed at which it all moves at I know that day means I’ll be 12 years closer to this life being over and that sort of finality kind of rattles a person. It reminded me that I have to do my best to occasionally put away the checklist, take a look around me at my family, my friends, my life and appreciate all that I have and let that linger. We’re all on the clock and I’m starting to feel like I’m in the fourth quarter. I need to slow down and enjoy things at times.
