Q: Sister Act
I hear HIM say often that they can’t sleep well the night before Qs, and though I actually slept just fine, when the alarm went off I was on my feet quickly and excited to get going. There’s always that “Am I nervous or excited?” thing for me – this time I was just excited.
I rolled onto the Boys Town campus and dropped off a coupon at the track and some weinkes at the practice field. What a morning! Overcast, cool, perfect! Back at the flags, guys started showing up and once 0600 hit, the mission, principles, and disclaimer were given. I also thanked everyone for making out to a day that was special to me, my 2 year anniversary w F3 Omaha.
WARMARAMA: PAX used the grass by the flags for W.
- 25 SSH IC
- 15 Tappy Taps
- 25 Cherry Pickers
- 10 Big Ones
- 20 Cowboys IC
- Burpee Shuffle (high knees and burpees around the circle twice)
PRE-PRE-THANG: PAX then ran to the track, where we began with something my brother Grillz has done a few times. I told everyone that we were doing this in honor of him because first, he brought me out to F3, but that second, he was hiking the Grand Canyon w DaVinci (respect, respect!).
- Coupon Chain Run – go until everyone carries the coupon twice
The coupon chain run ended up taking us around the track twice.
PRE-THANG: PAX paired up and did a Merkin Mile. Some modified, some pushed their partner, some strode like gazelles and barley broke a sweat – regardless, all worked hard and were better for it! What a group of men!
- Merkin Mile (pair up, 20 Merkins, run a lap – do this 4x, Al Gore to the 6)
THANG: Once the Merkin Mile was done, YHC explained what we’d be doing at the football field. We counted off, ran to the field, got in our positions, and launched into a grinder.
- FOUR TEAM GRINDER:
- Station 1 – push – 15 jump squats
- Station 2 – AMRAP alternating shoulder taps/CDDs
- Station 3 – AMRAP Bobby Hurleys/WOJO squats
- Station 4 – AMRAP Big Boy sit ups/gas pumpers IC
At 0650 Omaha was called. We ran to the flags and did some Mary.
MARY:
- 20 Flutter Kicks
- 25 LBCs
- X’s and O’s
- American Hammers – Rancid
ANNC: diapers for Boys Town, see Slack or as Patton for details
PRAYERS: for Mulligan’s son Xavier battling depression; for my 12-yr old son F3 The Entertainer, who leaves for a week-long mission trip with his youth group
COT:
Here’s how I got into F3. I worked out w Grillz for a lot of years in the mornings, but when Covid hit and the gyms shut down, he increased his involvement with F3, and I increased my involvement with Netflix. But that got old, and after about 6 weeks of that I told him I’d come out. Like a lot of you reading, I was immediately hooked.
In fact, once I got into the flow, I got COVID, and I remember being most upset that first I wasn’t going to be able to celebrate my wife’s bday, but second, that I wouldn’t be able to get to F3. Crazy. It had only been about 7 weeks.
Here’s the thing about F3 – it’s so compelling – so fulfilling – that you commit to it without even knowing you’ve made a commitment. It gets into your day to day to a point that having impact on others starts to come more and more naturally. You learn from others, you’re held accountable by others, and you desire to show the other HIM around you the commitment you’ve made.
An anniversary isn’t just a landmark – it’s a remembrance of a commitment kept. So today, I don’t think of my 2 year anniversary as something to look back at, like “I started this a long time ago,” but more of a “This is what I do, this is part of who I am, this is a commitment I’ve made.” I’d do well to keep this perspective in more things! My marriage, my friendships, my diet, my faith!
So as I celebrate this anniversary, hear me say that today is also a renewal and a remembrance of my commitment to F3, to myself, to my family, and to you, an amazing group of guys.
