COT:

James Hollis had a patient that who explained life this way. . .” I always sought to win at whatever the game (life) was, and only now do I realize how much I have been played by the game.”

A person may fight to win success (or situations), to be better than everyone else (or survive), and then one day find it all seems empty and meaningless, unable to value, enjoy and have peace, or take pride in the scars.

I think one of the best things we can do in life is realize that life is not won, but it is a journey to be valued, enjoyed and to be at peace during this journey, even amid suffering and sacrifice. By focusing on following the Lord, and loving those he created, while we go through suffering together. David Brooks – The Second Mountain
