COT:
Ever since this site opened up, I think “Heli-coil” every time I hear the name. If you don’t know what that is, you might not be a nerd.
Luckily for all of you, I definitely am a nerd.
In fabrication, one method of fastening pieces of metal together is to use a Threaded hole. That means that you physically cut metal out with a tap to form a hole that a screw can thread into. Sometimes those holes get cross-threaded, get rusty, or get damaged with repeated use and time. That’s when a lot of people elect to use a heli-coil.
You drill out the damaged hole, removing the rust and chewed up metal, then you re-tap the hole to a larger size. Then the helicoil gets inserted. The heli-coil looks like a spring. After you insert the heli-coil, the hole is restored and in some cases, has a higher torque and pull-out strength than it did with the original hole.
When I joined F3, my threads were in bad shape, and I needed your help to cut out all the rust and bad bits, and you’ve been the heli-coil I needed to create a stronger and more resilient version of myself. I need to keep coming to the gloom to keep improving this machine, and to help you test your limits and do the same.
