Q: Hard Hat

Weather: 23 degrees, clear skies, no wind

Welcome: At 05:30:00 Switchfoot was reminding the Q of what time we start. Lots of dudes did prestuff, which was great to see. We went through the full intro, and two guys indicated that they were new to The Calm. A brief agenda of the morning was provided and the PAX were then directed to mosey to the end of the parking lot and down into the “bowl” (while stopping at my truck to grab some coupons).

Warm-a-Rama: We circled up in the area with cones and speaker setup and started our warm up with AMRAP Sun Gods, forwards and backwards, then concluded with 15 SSH IC.

The Thang: The Sprint-Hop-Carry – Some of the PAX had a pretty good idea of what was to come when they saw the cone setup and coupons at one end. About a third of the group indicated that they have completed an APEX previously. They were all informed that the Sprint-Hop-Carry is not only the crowd favorite event of the APEX, but also the most efficient workout in all of F3Omaha. We were going to complete it with a “spin”. We numbered off into two groups, and each group would relay race each other. This isn’t a relay of each leg of the SHC though, its a relay in that once the guy doing it finishes, the next guy goes. So not really a relay, but kind of. While your teammate is doing the SHC, the rest of the team is doing an AMRAP exercise for the duration of the SHC. For anyone not familiar with the SHC, it takes an average PAX 2-3 minutes to complete. The list of AMRAP exercises was: Raise the Roof, Imperial Walkers, Johnny Dramas, and Plank. The SHC has cones set up approximately 25m apart. Today it was closer to 25 yards. It consists of 5 legs. Leg 1 is a sprint, down and back. Leg 2 is to Murder Bunny, down and back. Leg 3 is a side shuffle, down and back, Leg 4 is a two coupon carry, down and back. And finally, Leg 5 is a sprint, down and back. When we got to the second guy, the decision was made to have the next guy release once the guy doing it completes his two coupon carry.

Following the SHC, we circled back up for some yoga to cool down. After namaste, we did a minute of calm time. The last time I was at the calm, there was a lot of talking during calm time, so today everyone was politely told to shut the f up and be quiet. That did the trick. It was a quiet, peaceful minute staring at the stars. The bowl is relatively well lit, so I almost wish we had done the beatdown on the football field so we could have avoided the light pollution during calm time.

We moseyed back to the flags, bring the coupons and cones back to my truck, and any trash found along the way was picked up as well. We ran through the long list of announcements, blood drive, polar plunge, night to shine, Gradoville gala, and more. There were a few prayers. When Mr Rodgers mentioned the Night to Shine event, he brought up the F3Omaha foundation providing some matching funds. I’m glad he said that, because that is what the COT was all about. I’ve got a check in my truck to present to Gold Star, the principal at Elkhorn Valley View Middle School. It’s funds raised from the Thankful Trot. I’ve been wanting to present the check to him at the Calm, but he’s been unable to be there lately. I didn’t want to delay any longer at least telling the group about how we have raised money for a bunch of the schools that we workout at. The other day, a co-worker asked me about how we have access to some of the facilities that we workout at. I explained that usually we have some contacts that help make it easier for us to at least not get in trouble for being at these schools, but also how we will step up and help out with clean ups sometimes, maybe after a big storm, or if we just notice more trash than usual. We also do the Thankful Trot, and spread the funds around to different schools every year. The money raised through the foundation goes to either the scholarship or the general fund. The general fund helps provide support to charitable causes that you, the PAX, lead. The Foundation will have an episode on the Glue-oom podcast very soon, so check it out!
