10 PAX: Big Rig, G String, Busser, Razzle Dazzle, Ray Ban, Duracell, Farva, Schrute, Urkel, and Free Time

Rain the day before turned to snow with an overnight blizzard and covered everything in a solid inch of ice. Sustained 25 mph winds with gusts around 50 mph made movement difficult. Everything was done slower and more carefully than normal but it was a lot of fun. High energy throughout. Mixed in a few exercises with 31 reps since I am 31. With the route followed, we were drawing something to be discovered later when reviewing our workout in Strava. “Sticking it to the weather!”

It’s 5:15 – welcome to the Danger Zone. My name is Free Time. Any FNGs or Danger Zone first timers? (Said essentially as a joke given the weather.)

F3 stands for Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. Our mission is to plant, grow, and serve small workout groups for the reinvigoration of male community leadership.

We have 5 core principles:
– Free
– Open to all men
– Always outside
– Led in a rotating fashion
– End in a Circle of Trust

Our Credo is to leave no man behind, but leave no man where you found him.

I am not a professional (possibly a professional idiot) so modify as necessary. (Modifications were necessary.)

Pre Thang

Start your watches!
Very windy and cold, so we started running immediately to warm up.
Moseyed to the north to a sheltered area on the northeast corner of the school (north wind gusts and the sheet of ice made for slow moving):
– 10 Tappy-Taps (IC)
– 10 Michael Phelps (IC)
– 10 5-count Big Ones
– 15 Side-Straddle Hops (IC)

Beatdown

Ran west toward 108th – in the least slick area we could find on the northwest corner of the building:
– 31 Squats
– 20 Booyah! Merkins

Continued running west, looping the parking to the south, and then east down the first driveway toward the circle:
– 10 Burpies
– 15 Imperial Walkers (IC)

Ran west back down the driveway, turning south just inside the end of the parking lot. Continued south toward the next driveway, rounding the corner, up to the main parking lot junction:
– 20 Werkins – Ray Ban led
– 20 Thigh Masters (10 each side)
– 15 Groiners (IC) – Farva called out, led

Ran south to the southernmost driveway, or rather was pushed along the icy pavement by the wind, turning east and rounding the corner as much as possible through the grass:
– 15 Carolina Dry Docks
– 15 Pickle Pushers (IC) – Urkel led
– 31 Baby Dips (using the curb)

Ran east and rounded the corner north through the grass to the starting position, turning left and entering the field through the gate. Walked slowly down the stairs (very icy!) and straight across the 25 yard line, up the opposing stairs, and to the fence by the concessions, all in a straight line:
– 15 Monkey Humpers (IC) – Urkel led
– 31 Oh-Yeah’s (16/15 each side)
– 15 Sumo Squats (IC) – Duracell called out, led

OMAHA!

CoT: Complacency

It’s easy on mornings like this to push through and do difficult things alongside others.

Sometimes I find myself pushing myself in a particular area of growth and after seeing a little progress, I go easy on myself and make excuses to not keep working on it.

In particular, for me it’s relationships with other people. Spouse, kids, sometimes even friendships. All these things require intentionality and commitment to relating and growing. At least for me, that’s hard work. Even harder than getting here in the ice. It feels like it’s easier to wake up super early and work out than it is to be patient with my kids.

So, my charge to you is to keep working on relationships. And when you see progress through that work – and you will see progress – to not take that work for granted.

Just like our muscles would atrophy and our hard work would be wasted if we stopped exercising, so too will our relational work be wasted if we don’t continually and intentionally reach out, relate, and spend every day trying to improve.
