The Armory – ShovelFlag Pass
28 October 2022
Ta-Ha-Zouka Park

QIC: Gator and Yodel

On September 9, 2021, around 5:15 in the evening, I pulled into the parking lot a Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in downtown Elkhorn thinking I might be the only one to show up for this experimental evening popup workout. But I was immediately reassured when I saw Yodel was already there, anxiously awaiting a beatdown at the soon-to-be-westernmost AO in F3 Omaha. We had 10 PAX, including an FNG. Then we had drinks at Jukes afterwards. It was a glorious evening.

Fast forward to October 28, 2022, I was about to pass the ShovelFlag for The Armory to Yodel – who, again, was first in the parking lot. Love this guy.

Armed with lights, cones, and double-sided Weinkes, we set up for a sprawling eight-station grinder. I knew Station #2 would need to be at a wall, which was easy to find at the well-lit baseball field. But I started to doubt my knowledge of my beloved Armory when I started looking for a set of bleachers. Yodel didn’t think they existed. In my best Kevin Costner voice, I explained it was not a myth – I had seen it. Or had I? I grabbed a light a ran about 50 yards…. like a Predator in camouflage, it was right in front of us the whole time.

We almost missed the prerun, but set up in time. I saw some friendly faces and tons of cars in the parking lot. I hollered out that 5am was here and took off as fast as I could. I was super excited for today!

Pre-runners (???): I have no idea. It was dark. There was a ton of people. It was amazing. The Plague, Pantyhose, Cheap Seats, and Barn Door passed me at some point. But after my man Boji pulled up along side me, he was there for the rest of the run. We had great mumble chatter as always!

At 530AM, Yodel hit play and started with the theme from “Terminator

I hit the 5 core principles and this was definitely the loudest I had ever heard the phrase “Always Outside!” After hitting the remainder of the intro, I explained that a Yodel and Gator Q must involve three things: Movies. Trivia. And Australia – correction: Austria. This means the Burpee Trivia topic would be: Arnold Schwarzenegger! So, Stick Around

Looking at this group of HIM, I had to know how many we had:

Count Off… 56! Show time!

Mosey over the Bridge to the soccer field and circle up for

Warm-A-Rama: Broga All the Way

SSH x 15 IC

Tappy Taps x 15 IC

This mumble chatter was on fire! From the peanut gallery, I heard Mufasa say “I can’t hear Gator right in front of me, but I can hear Chucky on the other side of the field!.” Time for the Public Access Channel show – Broga with Gator…..

Plank / Down Dog / Runner’s Lunge / Pigeon —- namaste

We stayed where we were for the….

Pre-Thang: Yodel The Barbarian

Yodel Jacks, of course.

With our heart rate up, it was time to mosey to the center of the big soccer field for…

The Thang: The 56th Man

Since it was still a little early, I had to check with Vandelay and confirm my math that 56 guys divided by 8 was 7. Counting off into groups of 7, we started to head to the stations. Each group is assigned a number 1-8. The number of your group tells you which station to begin. No push group. Just complete the exercises at your station, answer the bonus trivia question, and go on to the next numbered station.

Nugent Flag Pass

Doggy Paddle had a great Q at The Labyrinth the day before. He crushed the COT. He did the same when he passed the Nugent Flag to Doppler.

Gator – pass flag to Yodel

We have a ton of leaders in F3 who are always ready, willing, and able to take a ShovelFlag and lead. You can’t go wrong in picking someone to lead a site. But there has always been something special about Yodel and the Armory. I told the story of how Yodel was the first one in the parking lot from the first day at the Armory and was again first to arrive today. It has been amazing to see him accelerate in all 3 Fs. I’m excited to see what he will do at The Armory!

Yodel talked about why he wanted to take the flag and how he and I have been there for each other over the past year. The flag was passed. A hug between brothers. It was awesome.

COT: One Year at the Armory

On October 22, 2021, we launched the Armory. I said the following in my COT: “

The definition of the word “armory” is:

An array of resources available for a particular purpose.”

To me, that’s what F3 is. It gives you the resources for whatever particular purpose you need it – that’s what I want the Armory to be: the place where you can go to get what you need.”

When I said this, my thought was that guys would come here for their first, second, or third post and then keep coming back. They would accelerate. They would become better in their fitness. They would find fellowship that brings them back. They would lead workouts. They would lead in their community. And that’s exactly what I witnessed. It was glorious. It was amazing. It was awesome.

But the unexpected happened. When I said those words a year ago, I thought that I had everything I needed. F3 had already given me what was missing in my life and there’s nothing more to gain. It was just time to pay it forward. But I was wrong. As it turns out, no one benefited more from this site than me.

Most of my time as a Site Q, I was marred by a knee injury. This took away a passion of mine: running. I could no longer prerun. I couldn’t post everyday. My acceleration came to a halt. The Sad Clown that I thought I had outrun had caught up to me. I shared that in my lowest point, I was ready to quit F3. I just wanted to walk away and forget the daily reminder that I couldn’t do a beatdown anymore. That I was unable to run. The only thing that kept me in the gloom was planting the Armory’s ShovelFlag each and every Friday. In doing so, I experienced the kindness of the PAX that gave up their workouts to walk with me. The graciousness of the Qs that modified their workouts to bruiser beatdowns so that I could participate. The words of encouragement from PAX that kept me going. And the wisdom of guys who had been through injuries that showed me the path forward was paved with caring about others, even when you feel at your worst. It’s because of these guys that I was still here.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to lead this site and thankful for the PAX that helped me through a rough patch. I was humbled and honored to carry the flag here. I am a better man because of that experience. But, more importantly, the biggest impact on me came from the guys who Q’d beatdowns here, posted here, and all of the men that helped me understand what real friendship means. Thank you.

And with that, my time as the Site Q of The Armory was terminated.

Tonight Show led us in a wonderful prayer. Thank you, brother.

With Gratitude,

Gator
