QIC: Sparty

SMurphers: Grillz & Sparty

Pre-Runners: Ketchup & Brad Pitt

What a beautiful morning! YHC planned on SMurphing with Grillz this morning as we both still needed to complete 3 more Murphs to finish our challenge. When we arrived, we were the only people at the park and it was indeed the Darkest AO this morning. Neither of us had a head-lamp and as we broke off the main path and headed south, it got dangerously dark. We just made sure we picked up our feet and kept moving. As we returned to the park, my anxiety started to rise in the anticipation of “who’s going to be there when we get back.” Great thing was that Ketchup and Brad Pitt also returned from their Pre-run and we all got a couple minutes with Ketchup before he had to take off. We then spent the remainder of our time listening to Mufasa talk about the Two-Club Conundrum. Congrats on another victory Ferd!

It was 5:30am and it was time to get going. As I started in on my “Welcome” speech, and I quickly noticed that it was awkwardly quiet this morning. I made it through the Mission Statement, 5 Core Principles, and my quick disclosure without a hitch, or an interruption. We then made our way towards the dock for a nice Warm-a-rama.

Warm-a-rama:

  • Sun Gods – 10 F/10 R IC
  • Cherry Pickers – 20 IC
  • Tater Taps – 10 IC
  • Tappy Taps – 10 IC
  • High Knees – 15 IC
  • Mountain Climbers – 15 IC

We got through these with very little mumblechatter. I wasn’t sure if it was just a quiet group, guys were tired, or maybe they were scared. I later found out at coffee that Mufasa is scared of me. First time I’ve never heard that so I think I will take it as a compliment. We then took a nice little mosey back to the big circle green space near the shovel flags for The Thang. There was no pre-thang, we were just jumping right in today.

The Thang – an IPAX Warmup:

  • 5 Burpees
  • 10 Merkins
  • 15 Monkey Humpers IC
  • 20 Squat Jumps
  • 30 Squats
  • 20 Squat Jumps
  • 15 Monkey Humpers
  • 10 Merkins
  • 5 Burpees

I explained that this was a nice easy workout that wasn’t complicated. I encouraged them all to give the IronPax Challenge a try as it is a great way to accelerate your fitness and its just you vs. you. This beatdown will give you a glimmer of how one of those will feel and operate. I let them know they could do this individually, with a partner, or in a group. They all work, and it was all dependent upon how they wanted to approach it. So, you perform all the exercises, then you take a full lap around the circle grass area. You exit and enter the area at the same point, which I used cones to provide the path. The exercises kept the men moving, and their heart rates up. The run allowed for their bodies to recover from the exercises, while it was a built-in opportunity to get some fellowship. There was a lot of heavy breathing, soft counting, and Mufasa with his hands on his hips. At 6:08am, I called “Omaha” very softly as all 9 of us were right there in a small circle. This was one of my favorite workouts in a while. While growth is fun and exciting, it was nice to have a break from a large group and have it be 9 really solid HIM working through a beatdown.

6MoM:

  • 15 Gas Pumpers IC
  • 15 Heel Touches IC
  • 15 American Hammers IC

Name-a-rama: I tried getting some energy going, but the guys were still pretty quiet. However, our man Firebird stayed true to his approach with yelling his name at the camera. I personally love it and giggle every time. Enthusiasm at 6am can really help kick-start somebody’s day.

Announcements: Two Club Conundrum next year will be August, 26, 2023. Get it on your calendars. IPAX starts this week. Murph Challenge ends this month. 1st Friday Lunch this week.

Prayers: For the Judicial System. For my friend Will, and for my Friend’s M who has a little rough go over the last few weeks.

COT: If you were at my Q a couple weeks ago at Main Stage, you heard me talk about the opportunity to “Stay in the Fight,” and embrace the darkness rather than looking for a light at the end of the tunnel. Today I’m giving you the sequel. 11 months ago today, I woke up at 5:24am PST to a text from Grad. He had been listening to my episode on the Glue-oom podcast and wanted to share some nice words with me. I got my day going at that point and met with an advisor that morning before heading to the airport to come home. While waiting to board the plane, I received a text from my friend Bret asking if the rumors about Grad were true. I had been in California all week, so I had no idea what he was talking about. He then called me and fumbled over his words to share what he had heard. I called my friend who is the Chief of the Omaha Swat team, and he confirmed the news that Grad was dead. I boarded the plane two minutes later, curled into a ball and cried the entire flight to Detroit. When I landed, my phone blew up. I had so many calls and texts and I didn’t know what to do. I found an escape upstairs at the airport where I could get away from all the ruckus and made a few calls: my M, Stranglehold, my friend Bird, Trevor, and eventually Nikki. I got on my next flight and continued to cry the whole way home. I was numb. When I arrived in Omaha, my wife picked me up and we went straight to St. John’s Church on Creighton’s campus and just prayed. I have no idea how long we were there. I then went home and fell asleep. I woke up the next day, and I was suddenly living in darkness. And I’ve been in darkness ever since that day. I share this with you because I’ve learned to embrace this spot I’m in, and I’ve adapted to this new way of life. I’m comfortable here and I’m not looking for a way to escape. I am navigating a new path. I love Wild Kingdom and the darkness that it brings to the Gloom. It’s where we men can forge our bonds and grow strong together. If you feel that you are entering into darkness, I say embrace it and lean into your brothers. Thank you for this opportunity to lead you all today.
