COT:

I am currently reading a book called The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson.  It is historical non-fiction but reads like a novel.  I can’t put it down.  It starts on the day that Hitler invaded France and Neville Chamberlain resigned as Prime Minister to allow Winston Churchill to take over.  It then follows Churchill’s leadership throughout the Battle of Britain and threat of invasion from Germany.  It’s an incredible story of a High Impact Man, a magnanimous personality, and a determined leader that is often moved to emotion by the struggle and resilience of his countrymen.

Early on, Churchill’s wife Clementine recognized how the stress of the situation was getting to her husband.  He was not his normal self.  And that was totally understandable.  I can’t imagine the pressure he was under to keep morale high and try to compose a plan that did not result in the annihilation of his island nation. Clementine wrote Winston a note using a French maxim that he often quoted, “On ne regne sue les ames que par le calme” meaning, essentially, “One leads by calm.”

This guidance really resonated with me.  It is ironic that I am a person that struggles with panic and anxiety disorder but find total comfort and calm in leadership.  Perhaps it is because of my unending desire to be in control.  Q’ing a workout or leading an athletic department does not cause me any stress.  What typically triggers my panic is when I am confronted by others that do not remain calm in times of stress.  I feed off the negative energy and the feeling of not being in control.  I believe this is why my anxiety reached its worst during the COVID shutdown.  My wife is a person that tends to freak out about things and hates it when I say things like, “it’s fine” or “it’s gonna be OK.”  My bosses at work are similar.  They like to make mountains out of molehills.  My leadership style is one of calm.  I know things will get done and situations will not always blow up.  I gravitate towards similar leaders, which is part of the reason I love F3.  It gives me practice in not having control over what will happen at a beatdown but trusting the HIM in charge.  Following with calm is something I will continue to work on in the other areas of my life, and I challenged the PAX to do the same.

I led us out in a prayer of gratitude.

Here’s to good days and better tomorrows!

Cheers and SYITG,

Mother Goose
