Pit Stop’s wife
Words of Wisdom:
Basketball has always been my favorite sport. I have three kids and all of them play. I coach two of them and my wife coaches them as well. For the sake of our marriage, we don’t coach them together on the same teams. This season has been a grind. A lot of time on my side with volunteering and sometimes my wife and I second guessing whether we put too much demand on our kids with their busy sports schedules.
We aren’t raising Division I athletes. Frankly, it may be tough for them to make high school teams. But, these are not the goals my wife and I set out for our kids. It has always been much bigger than the sport they are playing. It has always been about developing them into good humans. I think this is an important perspective to keep in the crazy ultra-competitive environment we live in.
So, wanted to share with you some values that my wife and I hold as it relates to youth athletics.
- Hard work leading to definable results
- Value of team work-sum is greater than its parts
- Respect for authorities-coaches and refs. Related to this, not only verbal communication but non-verbal. Also related, not having a victim mentality.
- Conflict resolution
- Keeping control of your emotions
- Building confidence
