Summary: Suicide run of the football field, turning around at each successive 10 yard increment. 10yd and back, 20 yd and back, 30 yd…. However, when running away from the goal line, a specific exercise is to be performed at each 10 yard increment. The number of reps or cadence counts of the exercises increases by 5 at each increment. Pax running away from the goal line will not cross a 10 yard increment without performing the exercise specified for that yard line.

Brains are damn cool organs and i am blessed to get to study them in my job. One particularly cool feature of brains is the spatial overlap of certain functions. Particularly relevant to us, the locations in the brain where we process the fact that we don’t like pain are the same locations where we process the fact that we don’t like social rejection and isolation. This makes sense, actually. Consider that lots of things that might kill us are painful, right? Thermal, penetrating, and crush injuries we learn to avoid real quick. What’s something else we learn to avoid real quick? Anybody got kids or had kids go through that baby stage where they go ape shit, as if you were goin to burn, pierce, or smash them, just because you are going to get a beer from the fridge and leave them in the living room? Well, humans have like the longest (correct me if i’m wrong) developmental stages of being fully dependent on another being for survival of any animal. So, that fear of rejection or isolation is literally a fear of death, and they react to you going for a beer, or even another slice of pizza, in the same manner as if somebody was coming after them with a cattle prod or a machete. It makes sense, though, since we know it’s just a part of the brain that tells you when to respond as if your life is about to end and it doesn’t care whether it is from something painful or just sad and lonely.
There’s a lot of cool research on this topic that has discovered so much more about the interplay of these stimuli that i couldn’t get into it in the gloom there, in large part because it was so goddamned cold that part of my brain was starting to fire and i wanted to get into my car.
But just a little of that research includes the fact that people who have a higher sensitivity to pain also have higher sensitivity to social rejection and isolation, and vice versa. Ameliorating factors also are related. People with stronger social connectivity actually report lesser degrees of pain in response to noxious stimuli than people who are socially isolated. The literature goes on and on with this sort of stuff. Oh, one more quickie. In one study, people who were told to take scheduled doses of a painkiller, ibuprofen or tylenol or something, report lesser degrees of discomfort or despair when playing a game that simulates social rejection. Oh, and you know how you get anxious before speaking in front of a large audience and your hear-rate goes up and you start sweating maybe. Yeah, its because that part of your brain is anticipating social rejection and it thinks it is going to kill you.

So, here we are in F3, beating the crap out of each other (indirectly through you-vs-you beatdowns of course), and we’re also here building social connectedness. And those are mutually ameliorating, like co-dependent variables. It’s brilliant.

And let’s not forget i’m just here having stood in for Patton today. While we should pray for his speedy recovery from all those fractured ribs and the tube in his chest, which literally suck - as in it hurts to suck and the tube is sucking the air from around his lung, we should do it knowing that just the fact that he is such a HIM and so many people here know and love him so much, that although F3 caused his injury, it is also potentially lessening his pain just enough that he will breather easier and expand his collapsed lung quicker and avoid a fatal pneumonia. So, Oorah to that, right?

aye, Two Step

PS. we almost forgot, but didn’t, to pass the Nugent (RIP brother) Shovel from Sweet Sweet, a childhood friend of Nugent, to Strangle Hold, another childhood or otherwise longtime friend. Strangle Hold was posting for just his second time, having been an FNG one day prior, to the delight of a number of PAX who knew him and of his relationship with Nugent.
