Weather:  66 degrees/66 percent humidity. Punishing on the upper torso if you’re a profuse sweater wearing a new M2M shirt.  But, as always, perfect weather for a No Doze Q.

5 am pre-run w/ Smashmouth instead of refining the Weinke. Returned to shovel flag to greet several more pax for the 530 pre-run.

At 530 sharp, we had an FNG (welcome Gibbler), so YHC gave up some time from the workout to recite the Mission statement and core principles.  Provided disclaimer.  Reminded Pax that we have one hour to leave the real world behind and try to have some fun.  Mumblechatter encouraged.

Short mosey south to the parking lot for Warm-o-Rama:

30 Air Squats, 20 SSH IC, 10 merkins, 20 SSH IC, 30 Air Squats, 20 SSH IC, 10 merkins

Mosey to the Farmer’s Market lot for The pre-THANG:

EMOM: 5 burpees/5 merkins, 5 air squats. Repeat for five minutes, adding one burpee per round = 50 burpees, 50 merkins, 50 squats in 5 mins.

Stayed in the lot for part 2 of the pre-Thang: mini-100s

Pax line up at one end of the lot, completed exercises together until the first man reached 100 reps then everyone sprints to the other end of the lot between each exercise.

Squats, Dry Docks, Bobby Hurleys, Criss/Cross Applesauce LBCs IC, Bobby Hurleys.

Mosey to the Track for The Thang:

Pax partnered up.  One man ran a 400 (some faster than others – Birdman!) while partner did burpees AMRAP.  Each pax completed two laps around the track.

We had some extra time, so each pax did a third lap while partner performed merkins AMRAP.  Omaha was called and we took a winding mosey back to the flags.

NO MARY – Instead, pax did 10 burpees, 20 merkins, 30 air squats.  Ended with 20 red bull smurf jacks.

-Announcements: F3 is coordinating to support Nugent’s M and family.  Updates will follow.  Support Kill Switch and Goodbuddies

– YHC was not as close as many pax to Nugent. My encounters with him, however, confirmed everything I have read in the numerous testimonials to his life.  Nugent was, by all accounts, and as evidenced by the pain his passing has brought, the “third man” described by Steinbeck in East of Eden:

“I remember clearly the deaths of three men. One was the richest man of the century, who, having clawed his way to wealth through the souls and bodies of men, spent many years trying to buy back the love he had forfeited and by that process performed great service to the world and, perhaps, had much more than balanced the evils of his rise. I was on a ship when he died. The news was posted on the bulletin board, and nearly everyone received the news with pleasure. Several said, “Thank God that son of a bitch is dead.”

Then there was a man, smart as Satan, who, lacking some perception of human dignity and knowing all too well every aspect of human weakness and wickedness, used his special knowledge to warp men, to buy men, to bribe and threaten and seduce until he found himself in a position of great power. He clothed his motives in the names of virtue, and I have wondered whether he ever knew that no gift will ever buy back a man’s love when you have removed his self-love. A bribed man can only hate his briber. When this man died the nation rang with praise…

There was a third man, who perhaps made many errors in performance but whose effective life was devoted to making men brave and dignified and good in a time when they were poor and frightened and when ugly forces were loose in the world to utilize their fears. This man was hated by few. When he died the people burst into tears in the streets and their minds wailed, “What can we do now?” How can we go on without him?”

In uncertainty I am certain that underneath their topmost layers of frailty men want to be good and want to be loved. Indeed, most of their vices are attempted short cuts to love. When a man comes to die, no matter what his talents and influence and genius, if he dies unloved his life must be a failure to him and his dying a cold horror….we should remember our dying and try so to live that our death brings no pleasure to the world.”
