I talked about the difficulty of communicating with my three kids ages 15, 13, and 11. I’m constantly wanting to know
what’s happening in their lives, but they keep their cards close to the vest…lots of one-word answers (ha!). Lately, instead
of peppering them with questions, I’ve been telling them “I’m here if you want to talk” and then letting it go. The problem
is they always seem to want to talk when I’m on “me” time (decompressing after work, watching TV show, trying to get
dinner on table, etc.), but I’m finding if I stop what I’m doing and pay attention when it’s comfortable for them, I get an
incredible amount of dialogue. It’s not always easy or convenient, but if I force myself to be ready to listen (on their time)
instead of ready to talk (on my time), I get a much better result.
Convoy closed with a prayer.
