YHC arrived early to set up something devilish and soon realized he was going to need to modify the plan. After a brief scout trip to see how washed out the road and beatdown area was, a second coupon was set up for the PAX. Luckily, the increase in coupon workouts lately meant YHC already had two in his car. As 5:15 rolled around, cars and trucks can flying in. Maybe it was the Twitter trash talk the night before, or maybe it was the first dry morning we have had in two weeks. Either way, the gloom was setting up to be fun. 

Promptly at 5:15 (and while Zorro still moseyed into the circle), YHC welcomed the PAX to F3, stated that we were here to plant, grow, and serve small workout groups for the reinvigoration of male community leadership and noted that we are always free, held outdoors, lead in a rotating fashion by our peers, open to all men, and end in a COT. With no FNG’s, we moved quickly to a Warm-A-Rama

Warm-A-Rama

  • Big Ones x 10
  • Tappy Taps x 10
  • SSH x 20

PAX counted off before moseying south until they found the coupon that Huffy beautifully made by hand a few weeks prior.

The Pre-Thang

With two coupons looming nearby, the PAX circled up for a shoulder beatdown. 

  • Sun Gods x 15 IC
  • Overhead claps x 15 on up
  • Carolina Dry Docks x 15 on down
  • Grady Corns
  • Squat jumps x 10 (as a short break)
  • Rinsed and repeated

As shoulders began to feel the burn, YHC instructed the Twitter trash talkers from the previous night to pick up a coupon each. The instructions were that if one ever dropped below the carrier’s eye level everyone would do 10 burpees. If a coupon hit the ground, we would do 20. The PAX were allowed to pass them at any time to someone else, and those carrying the coupons did not have to do the ongoing exercise. With coupons in-tow, the PAX moseyed to the light poles to start The Thang. 

The Thang

The Thang was simple. We did an exercise at each light pole, would lunge in between stops, and when we got to the far south side, we moseyed back to rinse and repeat. Within this, the PAX took turns carrying the coupon above their heads. Exercises at light poles were: 

  • Burpees x 10
  • Monkey humpers x 20
  • Low dollies x 40 on open (Waffle House – RESPECT!)
  • Merkins x 30
  • Carolina Dry Docks x 25
  • Burpees x 10
  • Rinsed and repeat to complete two total rounds

After the 2nd time through, YHC allowed the coupons to be dropped. We circled up for an experimental exercise that proved too tough to count, and honestly, a tougher item than it looked on paper. One PAX would to 3 burpees, while the remainder of the PAX did monkey humpers. This rotated around until everyone had done 3 burpees and somewhere between 70 and 80 monkey humpers in cadence. Butts were low, spirits were still high. 

Moseyed back to the shovel flags for a quick Mary. Within the mosey, it’s worth noting that Trench still beat everyone back to the flags despite still carrying a coupon. Everyone planked to the 6. 

Mary

  • American Hammers – Rancid style (worth noting that several PAX reminisced about how much they missed Rancid as we set up). 

Prayers/Announcements

  • Continue to pray and keep an eye out for Ryan, the 11 year old who is missing in our community. 
  • Half marathon and mental battle runs on Sunday at Flanagan Lake. Look to Twitter and Slack for timing and official detail
  • Blood donations coming up on Memorial Day and June 18. Sign up for one (not both)
  • Swiper is looking for pre-runners before his Dragons Lair beatdown on Saturday
  • Prayers for Swiper’s friend Pat as he continues his recovery, and as we gear up to see him join us on Monday. 
  • Prayers for Knobs as he recovers from injury, and also for his dad and family.


COT

I wanted to do something different, so a workout where a coupon had to be held up high seemed stupid and fun. There was some symbolism though, as I thought about my why. Why do I keep coming back? It’s the sharing, the honest, and openness of the guys who likely aren’t this open at home, among friends, or work. It’s amazing to see people share and be open. Well, the beatdown required people to share the coupon and be willing to accept the burdon from a fellow PAX. As we go forward, lets continue to bring this energy. Despite this not being The Danger Zone, a challenge to spread your wings, be open to more people, and connect with more PAX was thrown out. Look to Jean Claude, who has been a great example of how to do this and the benefits of expanding your comfort zone. 

YHC took us out in prayer. 

Post workout, THE BUCKLE decision weighed heavy on me. Do I give it to Dr. Thunder for being able to work out with him now that his golf season is done? Do I give it to Trench who seemingly was always holding a coupon and doing lunges with them above his head? But, at the end of the day, the mumble chatter today was about the trash talk and the travel of Doppler down to the AO. There was a great energy pre, during, and post beatdown, and a lot of that was due to Doppler. At the end of the day, his spirit and grinding through the workout was why he earned it today. Congrats!
