Q: Icy Hot

The QIC arrived a few minutes before 5am to set up for the Thang.

The PAX was promptly welcomed at 530am by the QIC with the F3 mission statement, core principles, and the disclaimer.

The PAX circled up near the shovel flags for warm-a-rama, which was led by the PAX. Five different PAX selected an exercise and led the group through the exercise.

Polaroid – Windmills 10 IC

2-Step – Side Straddle Hops 15 IC

Sticky Bandit – Big Ones – 10 IC

Dome – Sun gods – 10 IC forward, 10 IC backwards

Flanders – Imperial Walkers – 10 IC

After warm-a-rama the PAX moseyed over to the hill where cones were placed halfway up/down the hill. The PAX lined up across the hill even with the cones for the Pre-Thang.

The Pre-Thang consisted of a twist on 11’s. Each PAX member would take turns selecting the exercise and how the PAX would travel either up or down the hill. The PAX started at the cones midway down the hill. TC selected 1 Merkin on the bottom of the hill and traveled up the hill by performing lunges. At the top of the hill Cyclone selected 10 flutter kicks and a reverse lunge down the hill. We continued working our way down the line of PAX members in this fashion until we finished with 10 reps on the bottom and 1 rep at the top. YHC could not keep track of who selected what as he writes this backblast.

Once the Pre-Thang was completed, the PAX broke up into groups of 4 and within the groups, 2 PAX would run ½ way around the circle drive while the other 2 PAX performed the exercises listed on the sheet around the Memorial.

  1. Bobby Hurley’s
  2. Flutter Kicks
  3. Monkey Humpers
  4. Big Boys
  5. Balls to the Wall
  6. Donkey Kicks
  7. Box Cutters
  8. Squat Jumps
  9. People’s Chair
  10. Burpees with Overhead Claps

Most of the PAX made it through the first 7 exercises when Omaha was called at 608am. The PAX moseyed back to the shovel flags.

We use the phrase “Freed to Lead” and sometimes we just throw it around during a beatdown. This phrase has taken on a new meaning with me in my personal and professional life. It has changed my way of thinking. I have always been the type of person that believes everything has to be done my way or it’s easier if I just complete the task myself because it will be up to my standard or my way. Every morning we come out here in the gloom and everyday someone different is leading the PAX. This has taught me to accept what will occur each morning knowing the goal is to create a beatdown that will make each PAX uncomfortable. We all get to this end goal in a different way, but I have learned to embrace the surprise and to accept that every person within this group will lead in a different way using their own creativity and personality. This has helped me in my ability to trust other people that they can accomplish the goal. Today’s warm-a-rama and pre-thang was an opportunity for everyone to lead using their own personality. At the end, we accomplished a warm-a-rama and had a great pre-thang that included a lot of mumblechatter. We are all Freed to Lead!

Aye! Icy Hot
