December 3, 2020: Westside High School/AO – The Battlefield/Temperature: A brisk 21 degrees.

Q: Safe Ride

Safe Ride welcomed the PAX to The Battlefield at 5:30am.  The Mission Statement and Disclaimer were given.  Safe Ride advised we would not be utilizing the plush football field this morning.  Instead, the PAX moseyed to the parking lot west of the stadium for warm-a-rama.

The PAX remained in a circle for some BLIMPS.  The exercises were 5 burpees, 10 Lunges, 15 Imperial Walkers, 20 Monkey Humpers, 25 Plank Jacks, and 30 Squats.  Rinse and Repeat. 


The PAX moseyed out from the parking lot to the hill on William Street (the first street south of Westside).  Safe Ride pointed to an orange cone at the top of the hill and explained that the PAX needed to run up to the cone and complete 25 reps of the first exercise listed.  The PAX would then run down the hill to another orange cone and complete the same exercise/reps.  The exercises were listed as follows:

  4. Mountain Climbers IC
  5. Squats
  6. SSH IC
  7. Big Boys
  8. Plank Jacks
  9. Burpees

Safe Ride explained that he didn’t believe any of the PAX would complete the entire list but if it happened, they would need to rinse and repeat.  Safe Ride called Omaha at 6:04am and the PAX moseyed back to the shovel flag for Mary.

There was a lot of encouragement from the guys throughout the Thang.  Safe Ride noted that The Plague and Smashmouth were doing their best to prove Safe Ride wrong about completing the entire list of exercises during the Thang.  Safe Ride recalls these two beasts getting to the end of plank jacks before Omaha.


On this date in 1775, in the harbor on the western shore of the Delaware River in Philadelphia, the first “Grand Union” Flag was hoisted by the American rebels on the colonial warship Alfred.  Like the current U.S. Flag, the Grand Union Flag contained 13 alternating red and white stripes, which represented the 13 colonies.  The upper left corner featured the flag of Great Britain.  Now, the American Revolutionary War had already started earlier that year.  It stemmed from the British government being deeply in debt and the colonies disagreeing that they should be forced to pay the expenses of prior wars (including the 7 years war).  While not everyone agreed, the colonists determined that fighting for their independence was worth the sacrifice of war.  Make no mistake, it was an uphill battle to defeat a world power like Great Britain.  That’s what inspired Safe Ride’s workout this morning.  We all face challenges in reaching the goals we set for ourselves.  We may have a lot of uphill battles.  However, we should be willing to make the sacrifice to climb that hill and reach our goal.  Keep grinding.  Keep accelerating.  Strive for something great.
