The Sandlot Backblast – “Be like Gayle”

Sept. 24 2020 – The Sandlot Halleck Park, Papillion: 64 degrees and awesome –  Q: Gunner

PAX: Knobs, Firewalker, Trench, Tony the Tiger, KOA, Zorro, Nancy,

This workout was a straight-up, Old-fashioned Sandlot distance run.  The PAX met at the shovel flags in the standard F3 location. I opened with a motivated welcoming and the F3 Mission statement, 5 Principles and the little injury disclaimer.

Our run started at the shovel flags and proceeded through the dark nature path of Halleck Park’s arboretum.  We exited the path onto Lincoln St. and headed west for about 1 mile to the West Papio Trail.

The halfway mark was at the Papio Trail fork.  At this location we stopped to re-group.

After re-grouping, the PAX began the last half of the run on the Papio Trail along the Papio Creek.  A lap around the Halleck Park Pond provided a total distance run of 3.81 miles.  Just short of the estimated 4 mile objective

Announcements and Prayers

COT – Discussed Gayle Sayer’s memoir titled “I am Third” from 1970.

Read the quote from Gayle Sayers acceptance speech for the George Halas Courage award.  The quote was, “You flatter me by giving me this award but I can tell you here and now that I accept it for Brian Piccolo. Brian Piccolo is the man of courage who should receive the George S. Halas award. Mine is tonight, it is Brian Piccolo’s tomorrow … I love Brian Piccolo and I’d like all of you to love him, too. Tonight, when you hit your knees, please ask God to love him …”

Instead of being like Mike, we remember to live “I am Third” and be like Gayle!
