The Thang: Festivus 2019
We formed a circle around the Festivus pole, which was provided by Folsom. Everyone was invited to approach the Festivus pole, air a personal grievance, and then draw an index card from a bag and lead the group in that exercise as a Festivus “feat of strength.” Grievances were enthusiastically (and, most importantly, CONFIDENTIALLY aired). The following feats of strength were performed although probably not in this exact order:
• Merkins – 25
• Ranger Merkins – 15
• Knuckle Merkins – 15
• Hand Release Merkins – 15
• Makhtar N’Diayes – 12 IC
• Air Squats – 30
• Jump Squats – 12
• LBC’s – 25IC
• Pickle Pushers – 25IC
• Monkey Humpers – 25IC
• Calf raises – 50
• Side straddle hops – 50
• Big Boy Situps – 20
• Werkins – 25
• Copperhead Squat – 20IC
• Freddie Mercury – 25IC
• Burpees – 10
• Chill cut plank – 45 count
• Flutter Kicks – 20 IC
• High plank – 45 count (this was a very long 45 count)
• Lunge – 12/leg
• Hyrdraulic Squats – 8 (count on your own)
• Festivus Spellers– on your 6 with feed raised 6 inches – spell out the word “Festivus” 3X
• Festivus Burpee Wreaths – Everyone does one burpee in the circle one-at-a-time proceeding clockwise – everyone else in the circle performs an ancillary exercise until the burpee circle is completed. Ancillary exercises were fast feet (twice), and side straddle hops.
Mary: In his enthusiasm for Festivus and the excitement of his VQ, your intrepid Q accidentally bypassed Mary.
Announcements: Extended coffeeteria on Monday.
COT: Festivus traditionally consists of: (1) a Festivus meal, (2) the airing of grievances, and (3) feats of strength. We covered (2) and (3) for the workout, and for element (1) I suggested that a very appropriate Festivus meal would be ham and eggs. Ham and eggs is a good example of the difference between commitment and involvement. The pig is committed to providing you with the ham that goes into the ham and eggs, whereas the chicken is merely involved in laying the eggs. It’s easy to become imbalanced and find yourself committed to things that really only require your involvement. It’s even worse to be merely involved in things that truly require your commitment. As the end of 2019 approaches and 2020 begins, I encourage all of you to evaluate the ways that you are spending all of your time and reassess which causes you should be committed to and which causes only require your involvement and then adjust as necessary to make sure you are devoting the right amount of time and energy to the right things.
Festivus 2019 sure was fun for this dude. Thanks everyone! – Tugboat
